Art Appreciation 3 Subjects Studied

We held our launch meeting on 4th November and our first meeting on 23rd November 2015 when, to set the scene, 9 members presented and discussed a piece of 'Art' that had caught their imagination. Topics covered included: Art Deco; 2 modern landscape paintings by Brian Turner, a friend of one of the members; The Terracotta Warriors; a Picasso line drawing and 2 vases; The Taj Mahal; an Icon of Christ and how Icons are produced; Rene Lalique and examples of his coloured glassware in the Gulbenkian Museum in Lisbon; and The Girl with the Pearl Earring.

May 2023Industrial Heritage/Mining (John) Norman Cornish (1919-2014), the last surviving member of the ‘Pitman’s Academy’ art school, recent work by Julian Cooper (1947 - present), of the Heston-Cooper family, a mountain climber and artist based in Cockermouth whose work focused on large depictions of marble quarries, the life and times of LS Lowry (1887 - 1976) and his representations of the Lancashire textile mills and caricature 'people', Cornish tin mines and miners, work by Joseph Herman (1911 - 2000) a Polish/British Jewish refugee who had known Lowry, the Industrial Revolution, the rapid growth of factories (1750 - 1840) and the advent of women working in factories in the World Wars. We remarked how much of this art was an excellent record of social history.
